Getting A Proper Degree Is The Most Important Choices You Will Make

Today, the typical college student isn’t quite so typical.  About 40% of all students today fall into the nontraditional category, which means they aren’t fresh out of high school and moving out of the house for the first time.  Many of these so-called non-traditional students are returning to online college classes after taking a break to either work or raise a family.  Still others are making the decision to enter new career fields and want the required educational background to move forward.

Medical Degrees Can Now Be Completed Online

It’s well known the acute need for medical and health care professionals is reaching pandemic levels. Compounding this difficult issue is the fields are coming up extremely short when it comes to racial diversity. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 3.5% of all doctors are black and 5.0% are Hispanic, percentages that need a boost. While nursing has seen turnaround, there are a number of upper tier course online careers that are highly disproportionate when compared to the general U.S. population.

A key reason for this coming crisis is financial. That said, there are a number of major corporations and other institutions stepping up with grants and scholarships. These programs can be obtained on top of standard government assistance. One of the key professional societies out there, the American Physical Therapist Association, has a list that’s a good place to start. This is a short offering from that list:

National Institute of Health – The Institute calls itself the biggest medical research operation in existence. The also provide fifteen $20,000 scholarships a year based on academics and need. If that isn’t enough, where they really help is providing two other important programs for aspiring medical/health care pros. The first is a 10-week summer online medical colleges internship program. The other proviso is to hire many of the financial aid recipients after they graduate.

Coca Cola Scholars Fund – The soda and snack producer leads a group of corporations, including Delta Airlines and Cargill, to assist aspiring students interested in the medicine and health care. Their programs include fifty plans that give $20,000 a year and another that provided 200 grants at $10,000 each. Students who keep a 3.0 grade average up through their junior year can then reapply for more each year. They also have a number of other programs. In total, they offer 1,400 packages totaling over $3.4 million.

American Physical Therapist Association – This professional society has a wide slate of financial aid as a total student outreach series. They even include programs for those who want to specialize in such fields as pediatrics, neurology and therapists who will specialize in patients in the performing arts.

AmeriCorps – Founded during the Clinton Administration, one of the key public service areas this agency works in is health care as part of its public service sector. A student who does a 10-12 month hitch with them will be presented with an education voucher good at a number of on campus and online colleges. That one year of service also provides an invaluable internship.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program – Founded last year by Microsoft, this program is handled by the United Negro College Fund. It’s a $1 billion trust to aid training people in public health. Last year it presented 1,000 grants, and will start taking applications for the 2011 academic year in 2011. A student must have a 3.3 grade point average and fill out a FASFA form to apply. This expanding program should definitely not be overlooked.

It doesn’t hurt to do all this with the aid of your college’s financial aid advisor as they will steer you through the filing procedures and deadlines each organization demands. Online Degrees Enable You To Do Great Things

It’s not uncommon for students and professors at the college and university level to be lured by the promise of discovery, continued learning, and an opportunity to make a difference in the world. Some might set out to find breakthroughs in medical research, and others to somehow make the world a better place in which to live. Research grants for students as early as the distance learning degree level can set them on their paths to discovery.

Much of the research grant funding these days is coming from federal stimulus money. The money, part of an American Reinvestment Act of 2009, is sending a Florida student to  Antarctica to study predatory crabs as part of a collaborative climate change study, according to a July report in Florida Trend. A university in Massachusetts, awarded nearly $130 million in federal research  money, plans to research everything from computer security to the history of the earth’s crust, a July report in the Boston Herald noted.

A university in Nebraska, meanwhile, received $1.3 million in stimulus money to buy a state-of-the-art microscope that uses electrons instead of light and shows materials at the near-atomic level, according to information from Nanowerk News. The Johns Hopkins University Gazette recently reported that this university received 424 in stimulus grants that, at more than $200 million, are to fund projects studying everything from how the universe began to how men and women react differently to the influenza virus.

There are also foundations and organizations that offer research grants. The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, for example, awards $15,000 to $30,000 a year for one of two years of research in the natural and social sciences and the humanities as it relates to violence, aggression and dominance. The National Endowment for the Humanities provides collaborative research grants for archaeology projects and research that enhances an understanding of science, technology, medicine, the social sciences or the humanities.

The environment these days has been a particular concern. Toward this end, many colleges and universities are offering degree programs in sustainability. Programs such as these can help students study environmentally-friendly practices such as renewable energy. Degree programs like the scholarships and grants mentioned above might lead to careers in solar and wind energy that are becoming more commonplace.

Whether in on-campus or online degree programs, students can work toward eco-friendly careers in fields such as environmental engineering or architecture. Within these fields, they can work on projects that become Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified. This qualification demonstrates a commitment to sustainable design practices. Students researching these fields may find that they can apply for college grants to help them with their studies. As an example, The Washington Post recently reported that such funding was being given to students who chose to research environmental issues as part of their degree program.

Individuals who study at schools online may also be able to take advantage of research opportunities. They can complement their online degree program with perhaps one or two research-based courses at a local campus. This will give them the chance to meet staff and incorporate a hands-on approach to their program.

With tuition, fees and study materials, a college, university or technical school education can no doubt get expensive.
