What Work at Home Moms Should Watch Out For

Now that you’ve decided to join the leagues of women who have become work at home moms, you’re probably ecstatic about the possibilities that await you and your career.  At this point, you can do practically whatever you choose:  you can finally jumpstart a small business, start blogging for money, or telecommute to work instead of leaving the house.  The choice is basically yours, and this kind of freedom is what moms enjoy when they choose to work at home.

Despite the obvious advantages that moms get from working at home, there are still some caveats that you have to be aware of before you make the move from your office to your house.  Here are a number of major points that you should consider if you’re thinking of working at home:

1.    The urge to check on the kids frequently:
Mothers of young children, beware:  when you’ve just started working at home, it will be difficult to resist the compulsion to check on your kids every so often, but you’re going to have to keep your motherly instincts in check so you can focus on your job.

While mothers generally decide to work at home so they can spend a little more time with their children, manage your time with your kids wisely.  Instead of checking on your kids from time to time, interact with them only during your breaks or when the situation really calls for it.  Otherwise, your baby sitter will be fine handling things by herself.

2.   Distractions:
Face it, your house is a hotbed of things that could distract you from the job at hand, making it difficult for you to finish anything if you let those things pull you away from your tasks.  Some chores could lure you away from your work, while the TV can tempt you to the couch and get you started on a movie marathon that you can’t afford to take.  Make a daily to-do list, and be vigilant about sticking to your work schedule.  Learning how to focus better might not come naturally some of you, but once you get used to your daily routine, you’ll find it easier to stick to your work and accomplish more things.

3.  Extra paperwork:
When you become a work at home mom, you’ll find yourself being responsible for more things.  For example, you’re going to have to take charge of practically all your bills and do some accounting, which most of you aren’t yet accustomed to.  To avoid getting overwhelmed, make sure you organize all your bills and outstanding dues and create a monthly budget.  You can even ask for some help from someone more experienced in these matters than you, and if your business necessitates it, hire an accountant to work for you once in a while.

4.  Loneliness:
If you’re thinking of becoming a work at home mom, be prepared for days when you find yourself talking to no one but your kids — and yourself.  This can be difficult if you need social situations to do well professionally, but if you’re more comfortable as a solitary worker, then working at home will be quite a challenge for you.  If you don’t want to get too lonely or restless, set some days for seeing friends after work, or go out for a walk with your kids.

Despite the difficulties that come with being a work at home mom, there’s a good reason why a lot of women are still happy to give up their office desks to work in their own houses.  As long as you retain your focus on your professional goals and as long as you love what you do, you can successfully put up your own business, make money blogging, or telecommute to your job — all in the comfort of your home.
